‘The Art of Mark Making’ exhibition

Clay College Stoke invite you to their winter exhibition, ‘The Art of Mark Making’, running from 14th November 2026 to 3rd January 2027.

The exhibition showcases a carefully curated collection of work by an eclectic group of contemporary makers, inviting visitors to explore the expressive possibilities of mark making through a diverse range of decorative processes and techniques.

Rooted in centuries of ceramic tradition, decorative earthenware offers potters a distinctive means of exploring colour, pattern and expression. From bold, rhythmic designs to more experimental approaches, the application of coloured slips and the interplay of line, texture and surface transform clay into a canvas for creative expression.

The Art of Mark-Making celebrates the versatility and enduring appeal of this tradition, highlighting the way that brushwork, layered colour and individual gestures bring character and identity to ceramic forms. Through diverse techniques and a variety of personal approaches, the exhibition explores the relationship between material, movement and maker – revealing the boundless possibilities of decoration in contemporary ceramics.

Featured artists: Barry Stedman, Nigel Lambert, John Pollex, Richard Phethean, Mark Dally, Hannah McAndrew and Doug Fitch, Roop and Alice Johnstone.

The exhibition is free to attend and we welcome collectors, design enthusiasts, ceramic artists, and those interested in heritage and contemporary crafts to attend.

You can view and purchase from the exhibition at the Clay College Gallery at the Middleport Heritage Site in Stoke-on-Trent. More details are HERE.
