I like to explore the shapes that can be made by hand building with different clays – a smooth stoneware for burnishing and smoke firing, porcelain, a rough crank clay, or even clay dug from the garden. I usually start by making a pinch pot and leave the clay to firm up before adding coils. I generally have a shape in mind but often find myself adapting to the pot as it grows.

Decoration is constantly evolving. Smoke firing works well with the organic shapes, but I’m also experimenting with combinations of coloured slips, oxides and glazes to make pieces which are unique and functional.
