Don Hawkley
I have recently retired from teaching art to A level with ceramics and sculpture being my specialist area. My work falls into two significantly different categories; decorative and functional. The main function of one-off sculptural pieces or wall pieces is to bring what inspires me into the home. My most recent interests have been centred around the moonjar; I am making large scale (45cm) moonjars by combining altered throwing and handbuilding techniques. Other work is informed by living near the Suffolk coast; a shallow dish that suggests a rock pool full of kelp or the confluence of a stream, the ocean and the sea-smoothed rocks at the shoreline, the relationship between the sky, sea and shore or the uniform fine lines suggested by the wind-swept reeds of a Suffolk estuary marsh, may be reflected in the form, function and the textures and glazes of my pieces. I am also a member of the group of artists working at Butley Mills Studios. Working in such a vibrant, creative environment amongst some extraordinary artists working in a range of media is such a privilege! Although I am one of three artist working in clay at Butley, the beating heart is the bronze foundry and pouring day is always a special event!
