Richard Cranwell - RAC Originals
I took up pottery for the first time when I retired in 2012. It has been like a new awakening. I love the feel of clay in my hands, particularly when throwing on the wheel, and the realisation that it can be made into just about anything. The transformation that happens when the clay is fired is still magical to me as is the way a dull, creamy, liquid glaze produces glorious colours and textures when exposed to enough high heat. The sheer variety of possible expression and the complextity involved in trying to master the techniques of pottery is what inspires me. I still have a long way to go. There is always another challenge, always something new to try and to learn. I like the things I make to have a practical function as well as looking good. It is a very great pleasure for me to know that someone wants to use something I have made.
