Nicky Sheales - Nicky Sheales Ceramics

Following training at Middlesex University, (BA hons 3D Design ceramics/glass) and University of London, Nicky spent her earlier years in teaching, youth work & social care. During this time, she developed her own arts practice in various media. However, since 2007, Nicky has specialised in ceramics both as a practitioner & teacher.

Nicky’s ceramics reveal diverse influences-many have a nautical or seaside theme, influenced by her surroundings on the Essex coast.

Alongside these, recent umbel & seedhead decorated works reflect her passion for nature and she is fortunate that an abundance of source material can be found outside her garden studio door.

Another starting point may be a sketch , photograph, poem or pehaps a book illustration-all are rich sources of inspiration.

Nicky works spontaneously with clay to produce a versatile & skilful body of work. It encompasses decorative & functional pieces ranging from large scale commissioned sculptures to ceramic jewellery.

She often finds herself immersed in experimenting with surface decoration both at the unfired & bisque stages. Current preoccupations are with colour: printing & drawing onto the unfired clay and layering engobes, slips & glazes onto hand built and thrown ware. She is equally absorbed in expressing texture & form, especially on sculptural pieces.

Many of Nicky's sculptural pieces (& some of her bas relief plaques) are highly frost resistant & may be suituated in the garden. these pieces are made from robust grooged bodies. Nicky mainly uses a white firing (Scarva clay, Earthstone original) stoneware for thrown & decorative pieces, exploring reactions of glazes, slips & oxides in electric kiln firings (1260c).

Enquiries for bespoke pieces are welcomed.

Visitors are welcome by appointment to Nicky's studio at her home in Brightlingsea, Essex.
