Susan TuttonI began seriously working toward developing my pottery about 10 years ago. I joined Anglian Potters and managed to set up a little workshop at home, at first in the conservatory (no heating or running watery which was freezing in winter and too hot in the summer). Now life is much easier having commandeered the double garage and converted it into a reasonable workshop. Although largely self taught, I have attended various courses, including an Open College of Art course in Sculpture for one year and various weekend courses on throwing, hand building and smoke firing. I have always been attracted to the versatility and tactile nature of clay, and in particular the techniques of burnishing and smoke firing. I love the work of Magdalena Odundo, Duncan Ross, Jane Perryman, Anne James and of course many, many others but I feel my work is inspired mainly by these potters and indeed the origins which have inspired them. |

I enjoy the more sedate technique of handbuilding as I find that this enables me to produce the larger work which I like making, and which gives me the control I need to achieve satisfying forms. I have exhibited and sold my work through Anglian Potters at Ely Cathedral, Lion Yard and Jesus Lane, Cambridge; the Burton Gallery and Museum, Bideford; and Makers Gallery in Stamford. |
