Smoke fired vessel

Moira's vessels are handmade and individually unique. They derive naturally from the saltmarshes and open coast line that surround her, which shapes their form and inspires patterns and textures that are evocative of the tidal environment.

The forms slowly evolve using a combination of coiling and pinching before being carved to shape and burnished to a deep shine. Further design and texture is then added using a variety of techniques. After an intial bisque firing they are given a secondary firing in sawdust for one to two days, often wrapped in collected seaweed and other salt marsh plants that leave delicate colours and imprints in the smoking, like fossils in stone.

Smoke firing is an exacting yet unpredictable art. The living, spontaneous action of the flames and smoke is the source of the energy in the designs, breathing life into them and making each one unique.
