Anglian Potters

Erica Mattingly

I work in Stoneware, making relief architectural impressions decorated with earth colours and metal oxides, twice fired in a gas kiln. My Cambridge impressions are mostly of college gate-houses, chapels and odd corners. My Classical impressions, usually of amphitheatres, triumphal arches, Greek temples or ancient coins, are inspired by Mediterranean travel. They are not models, but imaginative interpretations. They look delicate, but are actually strong and durable, even in steamy bathrooms or kitchens - especially among plants in gardens or conservatories. Some are free-standing and can be back-lit, others hang like pictures. People often commission them as presents for birthdays, weddings, retirement or graduation.
