Pieces often evolve from a vague hunch or perhaps from a request - such as an art gallery needing mugs for its own use. From this type of beginning the objects develop in ways I could not have foreseen; sometimes remaining functional, sometimes not.

Modelling in soft clay is the technique I enjoy most. Sometimes the resulting forms are translated into plaster moulds for slip casting.

A piece (deliberately made in plain white earthenware) might well be considered complete after the application of a standard industrial glaze. If, for whatever reason, it seems to need taking further, I will use colours or transfers and then fire repeatedly until - with good luck - the piece emerges with that elusive something that surprises and satifies me.

Exhibitions and Galleries

Colin shows regularly at Contemporary Applied Arts, London and CraftCo, Southwold. He is a professional member of the Craft Potter's Association. His work is in the Crafts Council, British Council and private collections.
