At Canterbury Art College I studied industrial design  with silversmithing as my speciality. At Hornsey College I continued with 3D work although I enjoyed the photography. Then, when I started teaching, I was given pottery as my specialism with O'level and A level students eager to get on.  It was a tight learning curve but I got clay under my fingernails  - and as some people say 'once that happens there is no known cure'...

Background

For many years I used stoneware clays for my functional ware.
Many clays throw well and, when fired, are strong and suitable for daily use. So for most of my potting life I worked at getting forms and glazes that, although traditional in style, reflected my individuality.

When I retired I had the opportunity to change and so my workshop is now dedicated to working with porcelain. This has given me new challenges and made me rethink how to do things -given the whiter body and the potentially smoother, glasslike, qualities that this more expensive clay offers.
