Paul Scott
Demonstration and Lecture
Sunday February 25th 2007
Mundford Village Hall
Paul Scott is perhaps best known to us as the author of two books: Ceramics and Print, and Painted Clay, both published by A&C Black. For anyone with an interest in decoration, this event was a must.
Review
Paul gave an engaging and informative talk. He started by reviewing his work to date and its sources of inspiration. It all started with a move from painting to ceramic in college. Once in the ceramic department the quest to paint on ceramic began with scenes taken from the industrial landscape around him. This theme is still seen in his work today. Paul often subverts the traditional blue and white willow pattern the deliver commentary on the environmental impact of industry. Themes include nuclear power, foot and mouth disease and the three gorges dam in China.
Much of his work consists of applying printed decoration to porcelain plates, both old and new. The designs are created on computer and then printed onto film. This film is used to make a silk screen. And the silk screen is used to make decals which are applied to the ceramic. This is a complex process involving some unpleasant chemicals but Paul finds it the only way to get the qualities in his work that he wants. However, there are other and simpler ways to print on ceramic and Paul used the demonstration to show us some of these in more depth.
